Medical Insurance Tax Relief

March 9, 2020

What is Medical Insurance Tax Relief?

If you pay medical insurance directly to an approved insurer, tax relief is granted at source, i.e. the premium you pay is already reduced to take the tax relief into account.

However, your employer may pay medical insurance for you or your family. If they do, you:

  • will be taxed on the value of the policy through your wages, and
  • will need to claim Medical Insurance Tax Relief.

How much is Medical Insurance Tax Relief worth?

The maximum tax relief available depends on how many people are covered by the insurance policy and whether the policy is for an adult or a child (with a child being under 21 years of age).

Per Adult – Relief available is equal to the lesser of:

  • 20% of the cost of the policy
  • 20% of €1,000 (equal to a credit of €200).

Per Child – Relief available is equal to the lesser of:

  • 20% of the cost of the policy
  • 20% of €500 (equal to a credit of €100).

If your employer only pays a percentage of your policy, the tax relief you can claim is restricted to that percentage. This is because tax relief at source would have been applied to the portion of the policy you pay yourself.
